A Slow Travel Journey Through Culture, Nature, and Meaningful Connections in Eastern Indonesia
What is a Flores Overland Tour?
A Flores Overland Tour is a multi-day journey from Maumere to Labuan Bajo with cultural and nature stops. Additionally, It focuses on cultural villages, natural landscapes, while also offering meaningful interactions with local communities.
A Personal Journey Across Flores and Komodo with Dutch Travelers
In April 2025, I guided a lovely Dutch couple across Flores and Komodo. During this 11-day journey, the trip combined nature, culture, and local experiences. Moreover, they discovered this tour through my website, and from our first conversation, it was clear they wanted a relaxed, comfortable, and immersive trip. In the end, they shared that the whole experience felt very relaxing and truly enjoyable. Therefore, this kind of feedback is exactly what I always hope to hear as a guide.

Flores Overland Tour: A Journey Through Culture, Nature, and Connection
The Flores Overland Tour began in Maumere and slowly made its way west to Labuan Bajo, following one of the most rewarding routes on the island. This journey was designed as a Flores Overland Culture & Nature Tour, allowing my guests to experience Flores beyond the usual highlights—through landscapes, traditions, and everyday local life.
From Maumere to Moni: First Impressions of Flores
In the early days of the journey, we were introduced to the cultural side of Flores. Along the way, we visited traditional villages, quiet coastal areas, and hidden beaches. At the same time, I deliberately kept the pace calm, so there was plenty of time to enjoy each stop. Finally, arriving in Moni, a peaceful village at the foot of Kelimutu National Park, set the tone for the slower rhythm of Flores life.
Kelimutu and Eastern Flores: Nature at Its Best
Watching the sunrise over the tri-colored Kelimutu Crater Lakes was one of the most memorable moments of the trip. Standing quietly as the colors slowly revealed themselves created a feeling of calm and reflection that is hard to describe.
After Kelimutu, the journey continued through small towns and remote villages, where the natural beauty and simplicity of Flores became even more apparent—an essential part of any Flores Overland Nature Tour.

Riung 17 Islands: Where Time Truly Slows Down
Riung offered a completely different atmosphere. Snorkeling and island hopping in Riung 17 Island became a trip highlight.
Here, there was no rush—only calm seas, fresh air, and time to enjoy nature. As a result, my guests said that Riung helped them disconnect from daily routines and feel fully present in the moment. In fact, this is exactly what many travelers are searching for today.

A Rare Cultural Encounter in Soa: Traditional Boxing Festival
On the drive from Riung to Bajawa, we were fortunate to experience something special and unexpected. As we passed through the Soa area, we happened to arrive on the exact day of the annual traditional ceremony. In addition, the event included a traditional boxing ritual (tinju adat), which is a rare cultural experience and not part of regular tourist itineraries.
This traditional boxing, called Sagi, is a ceremonial event deeply rooted in local customs. In particular, it symbolizes strength, courage, and community unity rather than aggression. Meanwhile, the atmosphere was vibrant yet respectful, with villagers gathering from surrounding areas. At the same time, traditional music played and rituals were performed before the matches began.
For my Dutch guests, witnessing this event felt like a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience. Moreover, it added a strong sense of authenticity to the journey. In fact, this was one of those moments that cannot be planned, but only encountered by chance. Therefore, experiences like this are what make a Flores Overland Tour so special—not just visiting places, but also being present in meaningful moments of local life.

Bajawa, Ruteng, and Manggarai Traditions
As we moved into the highlands, Flores revealed its cultural heart. Traditional villages such as Bena showed how ancestral traditions are still preserved and respected. In Ruteng, the famous Spider Web Rice Fields offered a fascinating insight into Manggarai culture and agricultural traditions.
This part of the journey strongly reflected the essence of a Flores Overland Culture Tour, where observing, learning, and understanding local life naturally come together.

Wae Rebo: A True Connection Tour Experience
One of the most meaningful moments of the entire journey was the trek to Wae Rebo Village. Walking through forested hills and staying overnight in a traditional Mbaru Niang house allowed my guests to experience village life in a very genuine and respectful way.
Sharing stories with local families and waking up to misty mountain views made Wae Rebo feel less like a destination and more like a true connection tour—a deep connection between people, nature, and culture.

Komodo Tour: A Calm and Scenic Sailing Experience
After completing the Flores Overland journey, the adventure continued with a Komodo Tour, exploring the islands of Komodo National Park by boat.
Iconic Islands and Ocean Views
Sailing between small islands, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, and enjoying peaceful sunsets created a perfect balance after days of overland travel. Life on the boat felt calm and unhurried, allowing time to fully enjoy the surrounding seascape.

Komodo Dragons and Underwater Encounters
On Komodo Island, walking through the park and seeing the legendary Komodo dragons in their natural habitat was a powerful experience. At the same time, it was always done with respect and proper guidance. In addition, snorkeling at several marine spots, including areas known for manta rays, added unforgettable underwater moments to the journey.
For my Dutch guests, the Komodo sailing trip felt like the ideal finale. Moreover, it was comfortable, scenic, and deeply relaxing, bringing the entire journey to a perfect close.
A Journey to Remember
They said the trip felt smooth and relaxing from start to finish. The combination of a well-paced Flores Overland Tour, rich cultural encounters, untouched nature, and a calm Komodo Tour created a complete and memorable travel experience.
For me as a guide, trips like this are not only about destinations, but about creating meaningful journeys. Flores has a unique way of leaving a lasting impression—quietly, naturally, and deeply.
